Acne and Antibiotics
There is no cure for acne, but it may be treated with antibiotics. Since there are many types of acne, you may be able to treat your acne with topical creams alone, but those with mild to severe acne, antibiotics including tetracycline, minocycline and doxycycline may be necessary.
Acne usually begins internally. Antibiotics are oral medications that help to break down bacteria and reduce inflammation. Clear skin is a process and requires patience. It may take months or even years to figure out the right treatment for you. If you have been taking an oral medication for at least one year and you are still having breakouts, you need to talk to your doctor about making a change in prescriptions.
Once your skin is clear, it is important to continue your medication. If you stop taking it, most likely your acne will flare up again. Use only the recommended dosage as prescribed by your doctor. Taking more pills than prescribed will not get rid of your pimples and you may get sick from it.
Side effects include dizziness, stomach aches, hives, skin discoloration, photosensitivity, or dizziness. Women often times get yeast infections. Pregnant woman and children’s teeth become discolored. Doxycycline is usually prescribed for Lyme disease patients, so if you are taking this medication, your body may get used to it and be ineffective if you do happen to get Lyme disease one day.
Talk to your doctor to find out if oral medications will be effective in treating your acne.
