Acne occurs when your pores become clogged with bacteria and oils. One of the most common treatments for non-inflammatory acne is benzoyl peroxide.
Benzoyl peroxide works by destroying bacteria and opening up the pores. It does not cure acne, nor does it have anything to do with your body’s oil production. It will only unclog affected areas and possibly prevent some future breakouts.
Mild forms of benzoyl peroxide are available over the counter while stronger medications can only be prescribed by your doctor. It comes in the form of cream, lotion or cleansers. The medications that have benzoyl peroxide as an ingredient are known as BenzaClin, Benzaycin and Duac.
The side affects associated with benzoyl peroxide is dryness and irritation, but is usually a mild. When necessary, use an oil free moisturizer or ask your doctor which moisturizer is best for you.
Few people are allergic to benzoyl peroxide, but if you are you may experience redness, dryness and itching. Dermatitis may also occur. If so, try an alternative treatment that does not include benzoyl peroxide or talk to your doctor.
Avoid contact between benzoyl peroxide and your clothing as it could bleach it. Wash your hands and dry them immediately after use.
There are many types of acne and benzoyl peroxide may not work for you. Different treatment is required per the individual. To find out if benzoyl peroxide is right for you, speak with your doctor and he/she can recommend a treatment. In addition to topical creams, oral medication may also be necessary in controlling your acne.
