If you are suffering from persistent acne, you know how frustrating finding the right treatment for acne is. You have been extremely patient while trying different medications, but nothing seems to work! By this point, you will try just about anything to improve your skin because you’ve tried everything else right?
There is a new form of acne treatment that is currently being studied called blue light therapy. It is basically a blue light that is scanned over your affected area.
This therapy came about from a belief that exposure to the sun could improve your acne. They eventually found out this wasn’t true, but the sun produces a chemical called porphyrin that actually kills bacteria by releasing oxygen.
When placed under this light, acne sufferers have had improvement in their skin after only three days of treatment, at one treatment per day. They have had even further improvement after three months.
This treatment with blue light is still being studied. This technique has been in use for the past three years for cancer patients, but not for acne patients as the FDA has yet to approve it for use as an acne treatment.
One of the issues with blue light therapy was that it has ultra-violet (UV) rays that are harmful to the skin over time. New technology has produced a blue light that does not contain UV rays, making it safer as an acne treatment. People with nodulistic acne will probably not see an improvement with this therapy.
Talk to your doctor to determine if you are a candidate blue light therapy.
