Since so many people are desperate to get rid of their acne, they will try just about anything. Companies are aware of this and don’t mind making a profit on your desperation. Now, that doesn’t mean all acne products are a rip off, but as a consumer, you should always be aware of what you are purchasing. Many over the counter acne treatments do work.
The first thing you should do is identify the type of acne you have and what treatment is necessary whether its redness, inflammation, whiteheads…whatever it may be.
Be aware that some products may cause your acne to get worse such as soap. Soap is good for cleansing the skin, but certain soaps may irritate your skin more than necessary. Choose soaps and other general facial cleanser that are fragrance and oil free. Also avoid soaps with lotion.
If you use foundation, choose one that is oil-free and either non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic. Oily cosmetics will just clog your pores more. Try not to exercise with foundation on as well.
Avoid washing your skin too much. Over washing will just irritate and dry out your skin even more. When your skin is dry, your body thinks it needs to produce more oil to compensate.
Don’t pop your pimples. Popping them will only lead to scarring. I know it’s embarrassing, but if possible try steaming your face or take a warm bath. Doing so may solve the problem on its own.
Ask around to see what works for others. Once you find something, stick with it.
