Adapalene, also known as Differin is a cream or gel used for the treatment of acne. It can only be obtained with a prescription from your doctor.
This medication works by preventing pimples from forming beneath the surface of your skin and is applied once a day. A small amount goes a long way, so don’t put a lot on your face. It helps to control you acne, not cure it as there is no cure. Like any acne medication, your skin will get worse before it gets better, so be patient for at least 6-8 weeks. If your skin does not get any better after 4 months of treatment, talk to your doctor about alternative medications that could work better for you. Use the medication exactly the way your doctor tells you to and do not stop taking unless directed to.
Adapalene will cause mild to severe dryness of your skin, so you should be careful not to apply it to sunburned, irritated, or broken skin. It won’t work until your skin gets back to its normal condition.
Avoid applying it around your eye area, it could cause severe dryness. If you do get any in your eyes, wash it out with warm water immediately. You may need to call your doctor to prevent an infection.
Side effects include dryness, redness, scaly skin, burning and itching. If these symptoms are persistent, talk to your doctor about alternative medications.
If you miss a dose, just take it as soon as you remember it.
