Rosacea
is a commonly misunderstood condition. Clearly stated, IT IS NOT ACNE! While the two can occur together, they are two separate conditions. Rosacea is when the skin appears red in the cheeks, nose and forehead, appearing rash like. The blood vessels become widened or dilated. It affects white people as they have the fairest skin of the different ethnicities.
Acne and rosacea are different most distinctly because acne is a blockage of hair follicles while rosacea is more concerned with the blood vessels. Many doctors mistake rosacea for acne because it can have protrusions, similar to pimples, but with no puss and they don’t know what causes it.
While there is no cure for rosacea, there is treatment available. Speak with your doctor about which treatment is best for you. Pay close attention to what you eat and how your skin reacts to it. Certain foods such as spicy foods, chocolate or hot drinks could agitate your rosacea further. Often high winds and sunlight can cause your skin to appear even redder. When you notice your skin become more red with certain activities, foods or facial scrubs, avoid them when possible. Also avoid using cleansers that are harsh or contain alcohol.
It is important to be treated as soon as possible as it could get worse with time and could cause permanent damage to your skin. Treatments for rosacea include topical creams and medications. There is even laser rejuvenation for those that can afford it or have insurance that covers it. Speak with a dermatologist about the right treatment for you.
